A deck of 26 double-sided flashcards, 4 by 6 inches on thick coated stock, from Toddlers Can Read, the phonics program started by former kindergarten and first-grade teacher Spencer Russell. One side shows the letter in upper and lowercase, the other a picture and its word. The deck teaches the sound each letter makes first, with letter names coming later. Comes in four art styles: Cute Animals, Fairytales, Trucks, and Fruit & Veggie.

Spencer Russell has built a genuinely good system for teaching young kids to read, and these flashcards (his) are a strong, simple way in.
