About

A pocket monocular from Moulin Roty's Les Grands Explorateurs range, 11 cm long and 4.5 cm across, in green PVC. One eye, one hand, no strap and no case to lose. Using it well is a real skill and a slow one: a kid has to spot the thing with their own eyes first, raise the tube to the right eye, and then hold still enough to keep it in frame, which is nothing like pointing a phone and tapping. That slowness is the whole educational case for it. Sustained looking is what turns a bird on a wire or a boat crossing a harbour into something a child can actually describe afterwards, and describing what you saw is the step where noticing becomes knowledge. Moulin Roty rates it for ages 6 and up. The maker's warning is the usual one for any optic: never look at the sun through it.

Why we picked it

Karel
A monocular that fits in a child’s pocket while traveling. It gets them looking closely at what’s around them, spotting the bird or the boat and watching it themselves.
