The smaller scale is what makes the set portable, and it also changes what a kid can finish. At classic size a tray table holds one wall; at this size it holds a whole structure, so the trial and error of which shapes make a stable base and which ones close a roof happens inside a single sitting instead of across a week. Sorting the pieces is geometry practice before anyone calls it that, since the four tile types are told apart by their angles rather than their color, and building with them is a running lesson in symmetry, balance, and how a flat net folds up into a solid.
